Patients Coming Off Weight-Loss Medications Gain Back Weight at a Quadrupled Rate Compared to People Using Diet and Exercise

Obesity treatment often requires long-term strategies.

Fresh analysis suggests that individuals who stop using popular weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain reduced body mass at a significantly accelerated pace than those who end traditional lifestyle programs.

Research printed in a major medical journal points out that while overweight people frequently drop about a fifth of their body weight while using the jabs, the weight comes back at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.

"Users buying these medications should be aware of the risk of rapid weight regain when the treatment ends," cautioned expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of recovery implies a return to original weight in about 18 months.

Weighing Treatments

The study, which examined dozens of studies involving thousands of participants, contrasted the results of these new drugs with other pills.

The team emphasize that people who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone usually experience a more gradual creep back—around 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.

Explaining the Fast Regain

Nutrition scientists propose the way of the injections is key to understanding the amplified weight return.

GLP-1 drugs imitate a natural hormone called GLP-1, which moderates feelings of fullness.

"Long-term administration of GLP-1 levels several times higher than normal could lead to the system to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous GLP-1, and could diminish sensitivity to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.

"Stopping of this GLP-1 'fix' results in appetite is unsuppressed, making excessive eating much more probable."

A Lifelong Issue?

Health authorities suggest the injections for individuals with obesity-related health risks, alongside recommended lifestyle changes.

Many experts argue that, due to the likelihood of relapse, the therapy might need to be life-long.

This perspective is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who note that the findings "underscore the long-term character of excess weight," comparing it to managing conditions like high blood pressure.

User Testimonies

Users who have come off the medication report a powerful return of appetite.

"I experienced a switch flipping and you become ravenous," recalled one woman.

This challenge is worsened if users have not developed permanent dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.

Significant Use

Recent estimates suggest that millions of people in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with desire continuing to grow.

  • Adoption is greater among women compared to men.
  • The middle-aged age group shows the highest level of interest.
  • Many access the medications through private healthcare rather than public health services.

Ultimately, experts caution that while GLP-1 drugs are potent tools for weight loss, they are not a permanent solution and maintained weight loss hinges on ongoing lifestyle management.
